7 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your First Float Therapy Session

Float TherapyChances are, you’ve already heard tell of the relaxation and therapeutic benefits of float therapy (and if you haven’t, poke around our site a little more to get the 411). But we understand that your first session can be intimidating – like any “first” experience always is.

Tips for Floating

To help you achieve the maximum relaxation from your first session, here are a few things you can do:

Don’t keep track of time.

Your session may be timed, but you shouldn’t be thinking about time. Your experience should be about clearing your mind, not focusing on the passing of time.

Keep a towel handy.

Saltwater has amazing therapeutic benefits, but one of them isn’t getting it into your eyes! Keep a towel handy in the event you inadvertently get some salt in your eyes.

Come with an empty bladder.

Nothing will distract you from total relaxation more than a nagging, full bladder. Don’t drink anything within two hours of your session.

Focus on your breathing.

For novices, it can be tough to completely clear your mind. If you need to focus on something, focus on your breathing. It will help you relax.

Schedule a long session.

During your first session, it may take you a while to get “in the zone.” This is normal, and you’ll get better at getting into the zone faster in subsequent sessions. For this reason, schedule your first session for longer – up to about 90 minutes – to help you achieve relaxation.

Coat the Vaseline.

Saltwater is very therapeutic, but open cuts or sores won’t appreciate it. Cover any cuts in Vaseline to keep from getting salt in them.

Try it with and without a pillow.

Some people have a hard time relaxing without a foam pillow; others don’t. If you find it difficult to relax your neck, try a pillow; it may help you relax faster than without it.
